so i get it. i buy into the hype. gmail is supposed to revolutionize my entire life.
i've been quietly beta-testing gmail for months now. i've had an account for years for all the business type things like.. sending resumes and whatnot. and the band e-mail account was the one i always used for the day-to-day e-mail. well, brand new disaster e-mail came and went when that band died. and now it seems a little weird to still be using my olympia e-mail address. so i need something a little more permanent.. and gmail it is.
however, it doesn't matter how amazing gmail is.. it's still a fucking huge pain in the ass to switch e-mail addresses.
i've got important e-mails stored away on the olympia account that i'm gonna have to forward over and i'm still figuring out labels vs. folders and all the other weird quirks that make gmail work.
not to mention, my olympia e-mail address never created an address book, so there's really no effective way for me to send out a mass e-mail to the world indicating i'm switching over to gmail.
i'm sure i'll get the hang of it soon, but for now it's just stressful.
gmail. here i come. be gentle.

i made the switch a while ago... and never fully transferred. by that i mean i have multiple email accounts that all forward into the gmail box, and i can send mail from any of those as well. you can also change your "reply-to" address. i'm currently finding this quite handy as i have to switch out my old email from grad school (they conveniently make you change your address to a special alumni address after graduating) and i use labels so that people sending mail to the old address stand out, and i can respond to their emails as they dribble in. especially if you aren't being forced out of your old account, you can always do it that way, slowly, and slightly less stressful... it's late, so hopefully that made a bit of sense. in the end, gmail wins. good luck.
my friends one night thought of making "shemail". making it a legit hosting site(or whatever) but when you go to it, it just re-routes you to gmail.
how funny would it be to be "phildisaster@shemail.com" im mean seriously.
