mixed emotions and hipsters.

i feel like most of my friends who read this blog are hip kids. we are all somewhat fashion forward, like good music, probably do things like read pitchfork.

so while we all walk around this town wearing our skinny jeans and our beards and tattoos.. deep down, we are all just nerds and we all used to like really shitty music (and probably still do). we all do things that violate the "hipster code of conduct", and that's totally okay.. because if we were all actually true hipsters, everyone would hate us. because actual hipsters are really obnoxious.

i'm guilty of not really actively discussing my college years before i started going to shows and listening to indie music. unlike kenny, who somehow started listening to cool shit at like 12 years old, i was not as lucky. i was beardless. i had this ridiculous blonde-highlighted spiky hair. i liked bands like barenaked ladies and guster. i even liked nu-metal. this was in college, mind you.

i have come to terms with this.

another thing that i don't really talk about is that i used to sing in an a cappella group. we were called "mixed emotions". you know... because we were a mixed co-ed group. anyway...

i was proud of my time in the group, it's just not something that comes up in conversation at the local dive bar. not to mention, i always think of that scene in stepbrothers where the family is singing a cappella in the car and it totally makes me cringe.

anyway, the gist was that we would learn all these contemporary pop and rock songs, arrange them for vocals and then sing them at concerts around campus and stuff. it was amazingly fun and i met some amazing people through it.

why i'm even discussing this is that i received a random facebook invitation out of the blue for the mixed emotions spring concert. i left the group when i graduated in 2002, so the current group is made up entirely of people i've never met.

mixed emotions was entirely student-run. with maybe 12-14 kids in it at any given time. there were no faculty involved. each year, the older kids passed on what they knew to the new recruits and then eventually the new recruits replaced the older kids. when i joined, there were still a handful of founding members still in the group. the idea that this group that i left in 2002 is still evolving and developing seven years later is totally crazy to me.

it's been a long time since i've thought about mixed emotions. i'm semi-interested in driving to blacksburg to see the concert, but something tells me it would be totally weird. i wonder how i would have felt if some random old dude had come up to me when i was in the group and said "oh hey, i used to be in mixed emotions seven years ago." so weird.

it's comforting to know that the thing that i cared about and spent so much time doing during my college years is still continuing on. and other kids who are having a whole new experience with the same group.

and as it turns out, thanks to the power of youtube, the new mixed emotions isn't half bad! it'll never be as good as the class of 2002 version, but i think i might be a little biased.

oh, blog.

blog, we've become close friends. you've been there through thick and thin.

we've laughed together, cried together, felt awkward and uncomfortable together.

i feel like i have so much to tell you, but i can't quite just yet.

you see, you're not only my blog. you're the internet. where anyone with an internet connection can read this, which can get a little dangerous.

but here's the basic gist:

things are happening in my life that i feel really good about. and i haven't felt this good about things in a long while. it's been a rough damn year. it's crazy to think that in 15 days, it will have been one year since my accident. one year. i can't even believe it.

and i'm still dealing with repercussions from it to this day.

in addition to all things accident-related, it will have been six months since something else crazy and life-changing happened (albeit with no facial fractures).

time flies when you're having fun, i guess?

life has been pretty tumultuous lately.

i feel like, very soon, i will be taking steps in my life that put me on a path towards feeling less like i'm on a rollercoaster and more in control of my life.

this can only lead to awesome good things.

i give all credit to the courage wolf.

iceland iceland iceland

i am hoping not to go to iceland alone, but if it comes to that, i'm starting to learn the local language:

“Ég myndi kaupa handa þér drykk ef það væri ekki svona dýrt, getum við ekki bara farið beint heim til mín?” (Translation: “I’d like to buy you a drink but it’s so expensive, let’s just skip it and go straight back to my place”).

anxious.

things that make me less anxious:

- bon iver
- a house well-stocked with diet pepsi
- planning my trip to iceland
- reading comic books that ian bought me

courage wolf for a monday.

it's monday. i need courage wolf today.

and i can't stay away because you're a radio wave
and you always seem to be transmitting to my brain

my friends from boys night out started this new project called the hard calibers. and they recorded this cover and it's beautiful. listen: http://myspace.com/hardcalibersmusic

the original song was written by 17-year-old justin veatch from new york under the moniker the ivoryton piano factory. apparently justin passed away september of last year, but he left behind some songs that were truly amazing considering his young age. after justin passed away, word spread about his music and some musicians are putting together a tribute album including mike kinsella and others.

it's pretty inspiring and worth checking out. you can listen to the hard caliber's cover and justin's original on their respective myspace pages. for more info on the memorial fund, click below:

Really Fucking Irritating

RFIs and RFPs are the bane of any low-level marketing agency employee's existence.

they stand for request-for-information or request-for-proposal respectively and it's basically an agency's chance to pitch new business to a new client.

they are hell because inevitably, and i mean every SINGLE fucking time, you're scrambling at the last possible second to make the UPS drop in time to get it overnighted to Bob Corporate Guy who made the deadline.

this time, it's a pitch i'm not working on. but i could sense something was wrong when i got an ichat yesterday from a co-worker. do you think you could help us get some disks burned for an RFI on friday? sure, i said. no problem.

last night i got an "are you ready for tomorrow?" e-mail from the same co-worker.

okay, now my red flags are up. just what the hell did i sign up for?

needless to day, all day long today i've been getting regular updates like "we're almost done, we're almost ready!" and yet, here i am at 5:15pm on a friday and i don't have shit.

not to mention, the burning disks now turned into burning disks and making color copies of a 60-page document and binding five copies.

did i mention it's 5:15pm on a friday?

it might be different if i'd been slaving over this RFI for days and it actually meant something to me. but i am a pinch hitter. i was called in at the last minute because i happen to work at an office with a color copier and a UPS machine. score.

so now here i am. i don't have the strength to start any of my other assignments, so i'm just sitting here killing time, waiting for an RFI.

here is a top 5 list of things to do while waiting for an RFI on a friday night:

5) mentally map out all the UPS dropboxes by distance and pickup-time, knowing you will miss the first few inevitably.
4) cry
3) sing loudly because you're the only person left in the office
2) play with the binding machine, contemplate writing and binding your own children's book

and the number one thing to do while waiting for an RFI?!

the siege of petersburg

these are the men of company B, U.S. engineer battalion from maine. this photo was taking during the siege of petersburg, va.

from the sometimes incorrect (but not in this case) wikipedia:
The Richmond-Petersburg Campaign was a series of battles around Petersburg, Virginia, fought from June 9, 1864, to March 25, 1865, during the American Civil War. Although it is more popularly known as the Siege of Petersburg, it was not a classic military siege, in which a city is usually surrounded and all supply lines are cut off. It was nine months of trench warfare in which Union forces commanded by Lt. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant assaulted Petersburg unsuccessfully and then constructed trench lines that eventually extended over 30 miles around the eastern and southern outskirts of the city. Petersburg was crucial to the supply of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee's army and the Confederate capital of Richmond.

Lee finally yielded to the overwhelming pressure—the point at which supply lines were finally cut and a true siege would have begun—and abandoned both cities in April 1865, leading to his retreat and surrender in the Appomattox Campaign. The Siege of Petersburg foreshadowed the trench warfare that would be common in World War I, earning it a prominent position in military history. It also featured the largest concentration of African American troops employed in the war, who suffered heavy casualties at such engagements as the Battle of the Crater and Chaffin's Farm.

the events that occurred during the siege of petersburg led to the fall of richmond and the inevitable surrender of lee's army days later in appamattox.

general lee knew his forces were completely outnumbered and he wouldn't be able to hold out much longer in his entrenched position. in the pre-dawn hours of april 2nd, grant made his move and attacked the entire confederate line. the confederate army fought bravely and held the line as long as they could, but the line broke during the day. lee knew he would not be able to fight another day, so in the darkness of night, the confederate armies were ordered to retreat from the front and rendezvous in farmville, va.

a week later, lee would be forced to surrender.

------

i'm thinking about a) going to the petersburg battlefield on sunday and b) doing a driving tour of lee's retreat and inevitable surrender. i don't think i can do both in one day, but let me know if any of you civil war nerds might be interested.

bed time.

this is a big-time soulmate dealbreaker kind of question.

you're going to bed. which do you prefer as you fall asleep:

a) music quietly playing in the background

b) tv or movie quietly playing in the background

your answer to this question may or may not determine whether or not we are soulmates.

life.

tomorrow is a big day.

tomorrow i have a rare opportunity to take my life and say "life, i've had it up to here with you. i've let you run the show for a few years now. but, this time i'm running shit. i'm in charge."

and life will look at me, and size me up like i'm some scrawny kid. life will chuckle a bit and turn back around and keep walking.

and then i will run at full speed, tackle life to the ground from behind, put life in a chokehold and wait until it begs for mercy.

here goes nothing.

reconnecting on facebook.

facebook is so WEIRD, man.

the other day i stumbled across a picture of this girl who i sang with in high school choir. i had a huge crush on her at one point (this was usually the case with every girl in the choir) but we ended up with a pretty cool friendship. she moved away and we lost touch over the years.

so, when i see her profile she is (of course) married and (of course) has kids, further reminding me that i belong to some misfit tribe of late-20-somethings who chose this weird single free-floating lifestyle. instead of raising children, i write in a blog. instead of being married, i hang out in bars.

we all make our choices. there are moments when i feel like a complete and total fuckup and i'm sure she has moments where she wished she was at a dance party at 1:00am on a friday night.

it all balances out.

anyway, the comment she left me was pretty hilarious:

Phil! It HAS been 10 years- wow! You were an extra in a music video?! Sounds like things are going very well for you! Thanks for sending me a message, I love catching up!

since that what was currently on my wall, that's what she went with. but i wanted to be like "well, actually, that's not all.. i made my OWN music videos.. twice! and i toured for 5 years and saw the country. and i got a marketing degree. and i've been on all these crazy adventures." but obviously that would have just been weird.

and the thing is, i did the same thing to her. i saw she's married and has a kid and lives in roanoke. but i have no idea what the hell she's been doing the past ten years of her life. a million things, good and bad, have happened in her life since i last saw her, and all i have to go on is some wall posts and a few pictures. i forget what i wrote on her wall but it was something like "oh i see you're married now! looks like life is going well! blah blah.."

i just think it's funny that there's someone from my past on facebook whose basic knowledge of the last ten years of my life was my role as an extra in the riot before video.

at least, however, she didn't ask me about my robot i was building.

fucking TUESDAY.

it is clear that kenny and i are not fans of tuesday.

life imitating art

karen inadvertantly became a part of the show LOST today.

now every 108 minutes she has to enter the numbers or her computer starts beeping at her. and she can't figure out how to delete it.

i'd like to thank her personally typing the numbers in every 108 minutes and keeping the world safe.

morrissey: the musical

tonight katie, bill, and i watched "i love you, man". katie, sorry i forgot your phone charger. the movie was pretty funny. paul rudd rarely disappoints.

on the drive home, bill and i started talking about writing a broadway musical based around morrissey/smiths songs.

i think between bill and myself, and our nerdy love for broadway musicals, we could write a pretty kickass morrissey musical. we started talking about who would choreograph, design the sets, etc. etc.

then i got home and found out that there is a morrissey musical already in the works.

at first, i was filled with sadness. but then i saw who was writing it.. none other than thomas lennon, formerly of the state and currently of reno 911. my hope was restored. if i wasn't going to write the world's first morrissey musical, at least it would be someone awesome.

the riot before.

the riot before made a music video.

in my professional opinion, it is totally awesome.

not to mention, i make a cameo in the music video as "stoked out guy #8".

see if you can spot me.

The Riot Before - "We Are Wild Stallions!" from Dave O'Dell on Vimeo.

seriously though, these guys work hard and they definitely did the same on this video. i'm proud of my friends. they deserve to take over the world.

twittiquette?

man, twitter. it's been a whirlwind of a week.

i fell in love with you hard, and then over the weekend i was like "whoa, maybe i'm not that into you." and now i'm back on the fence.

here's the thing, i get why people hate the idea of twitter. i agree on all points. i don't think it's healthy for our generation who already spend too much time connected on the internet rather than connecting with real people. especially if you're sending out status updates like "eating lunch." or "going to the mall."

however, most of my real-life friends and new twitter friends are people who are witty, insightful, and use twitter as a platform to make silly observations about their day that would otherwise float out of your head. i'm interested in that. i also think it's a great way to communicate about things going on in this small city of ours. i like being more tapped-in locally to events and other things going on.

that said, as more and more people have started to "follow" me, i've been feeling weird about the proper etiquette. do i have to follow someone who follows me? is that rude not to?

right now i've got some basic following rules that i've established. if you follow me, i'll follow you back if:

1) i know you in real-life
2) i know you in e-life (i.e. blogs i read, people who comment regularly here, etc.)
3) i don't know you, but you seem interesting and exciting
4) i don't know you, but you seem interesting and exciting, and you don't update 35 times a day.

for the most part though, i'm not really trying to add a bunch of people i don't know. one of the reasons i hate facebook is that i don't have the time to go scrolling through everyone i know in the world's status updates.

so far, it's working out. if i'm being a twitter a-hole, please don't hesitate to inform me.

and for the love of god, please please tell me if i'm one of those people that twitters too much. it's new and exciting and i'm trying to keep it under control. i definitely don't want to be "that guy".

bat for lashes.

oh my god.

some things you need to know about natasha khan aka bat for lashes.

a) she writes amazing beautiful haunting music.

b) i would like to go on a date with her.

c) BANGS!

attn: ladies

try not to make out with me when you see me wearing this:

big ups to the banana republic outlet store for saving me a ridiculous amount of money on what would otherwise be a heinously expensive purchase.

bill chubb: fun facts

yesterday, kenny and i were getting ready to head out for an exciting bike ride.

kenny had just purchased his new iphone yesterday and was excited about getting it all set up, etc.

as we were getting our bikes ready to head out, we were discussing the virtues of where to keep your iphone - in your front pocket vs. in your back pocket.

bill chimes in:

"i got both of you beat. i keep my iphone in the future."

bill chubb, ladies and gentlemen.

gmail. i love you so damn much.

so as i've said before on this blog, my love for gmail knows no bounds.

when i made the switch, i could feel my life getting easier and awesomer.

one of the coolest things about gmail are all the add-ons found on gmail labs. for instance, there's the mail googles app that makes you do math problems in order to send e-mails after midnight. a must-have for any drinker!

the latest gmail labs creation takes the cake though.

the UNDO button!

yes, that's right.

did you send an e-mail to the wrong person? did you say something you didn't mean to say? did you accidentally hit reply all?

you get a five second window in which to hit google's panic button and save your e-mail from flying off to it's recipient.

brilliant. thanks gmail.

check it out here!

the weekend.

oh man, this weekend is going to be so epic. i'm not quite sure how i'm going to survive it.

things are looking up.

i am feeling optimistic.

2008 was obviously a shit year for many reasons, mostly having to do with getting my face broken. but i thought the first part of 2009 would be a step in the right direction. and for the most part, it has been. it's just been slow-starting. things with work got off to a rough start with a lot of my close friends getting let go and having my role switched up on me.

i'm starting to develop a rhythm though. i'm figuring things out and i like that feeling.

on a lot of different fronts in my life, i feel like i'm making moves and setting myself up for some great things.

it's nice to focus on the positives.

here's just a few:

- my new record label now has its first band and i couldn't be happier about who it is. the website is in development and in the next few months, things are going to start happening. updates coming soon!

- i did some things recently at work that i was really proud of. things i wouldn't think i would feel accomplished about, but i really enjoy being able to start with an idea and be able to actually deliver awesome results.

- i am buying my first real piece of art from peter, which is something i've wanted to do for years now. that's not really an accomplishment, but it feels great to be supporting my friend and it's an amazing piece.

- i've been reading a TON of civil war books. i'm learning more by the day and i'm totally excited about this new history nerd stage of my life.

- i finally got back on my bike recently after months of hibernation over the winter and it feels so good. i envision a spring/summer of serious bike fun.

- kenny and i are DJing again after taking a little break. i'm super excited to get back into that because it is ridiculously fun.

- i got to see MORRISSEY seven blocks from my house and it was everything i could have hoped it to be.

those are just a few. there's more.

things are turning around!

let's go.. rams!

ha ha.

i zee ztha you like zee french toast! huh huh huh!

reposted from mari.

available here.

an open letter to the creator of facebook.

dear bob facebook (founder and creator of facebook),

my name is phil. i use your website to keep tabs on my co-workers, long lost jr. high friends, and various people i see at bars.

up until recently, i had given up on hating you and had finally embraced your subpar social networking site, but then you went and redesigned it and confused the hell out of me again, and now i officially re-hate you.

you see, i can't read anything in my news feed because apparently i can't figure out how to turn off quiz results.

don't get me wrong, i love quizzes. i think they're a great way to find out what city you should live in, whether you're a vampire or a werewolf, and what vegetable you are.. it's just a little much.

so when i'm trying to check out what my friends are doing, i have to scroll through 8 pages of quizzes. i'm not mad at my friends for taking quizzes. i'm mad at YOU, bob, for making me read them.

and then, of course, i'm mostly mad at myself for getting mad about facebook.

nevermind, forget it. i'm going to go take a quiz.

sincerely,

phil

courage wolf.

odds are i'm probably way late to the party on this one, but i saw them and had to laugh.

i feel like if i woke up to one of these messages of encouragement every day, i could do just about anything.

meet "courage wolf":

finally.

things that currently kill me.

#1: bangs

whoa.

i don't know what happened to my brain today, but i am SOOO NOT WORKING.

i don't think i've had a day this unproductive in months.

here's my day:

- look at to-do list
- look at screen
- sigh
- ichat someone about something unimportant
- check various internet sites (blog, twitter, facebook, e-mail, washingtonpost)
- look at to-do list again
- do one thing on to-do list
- cross off item with great satisfaction
- look at to-do-list
- look at screen
- sigh

repeat till 6:00pm.

tonight, in my personal non-work life, i plan to be very productive. i have much preparing to do for various life things. i also plan to play my neglected autoharp a little more tonight. i broke it out over the weekend and had a lot of fun with it.

i'm telling you, if i can find the right girl with the right voice with the right guitar, we're going to make the best damn ida cover band you've ever heard.

you may not have ever heard an ida cover band though, so that's a pretty easy statement to make.

tweet tweet.

if you look to the right menu, you will see my twitter shit.

so far my experiment with twitter has been a success. i'm into it.

he's waiting for your call.

funeral.

okay, this is an epic downer post, but these things need to be thought about.

what song do you want played at your funeral?

i've given this some thought and ideally i would like to have a choir sing "lux arumque" by eric whitacre.

now, it's going to be kinda tough to get a choir on short notice who already knows the song, so this is going to kinda hinge on the fact that i'll be famous by the time i die. that way, using my vast connections through my fame, i'll have choirs jumping at the chance to sing.

ideally, it would be a state funeral, so it could be in a huge room with great acoustics. i am not sure what i can do between now and my death to help me obtain a state funeral, but i'm going to do my best. i think i might need to run for office or something.

anyway, here's the song. it's fucking amazing.

what song would YOU have played at YOUR funeral?

boy gangs of richmond.

so as i was doing a little historical richmond digging, i came across some fascinating material on rival gangs of adolescent boys in richmond during the civil war. gangs such as the "shockoe hill cats" would get into turf battles with the other gangs, staging huge rock fights and other mayhem.

From the Richmond Dispatch, 3/28/1862:

Rock Battles. – The Shockoe Hill Cats and Butchertown Cats, as the boys of the two localities referred to denominate themselves, have on several occasions been showing their want of breeding and parental discipline by indulging in savage reencounters on the hill north of the President’s House. The adolescent ruffians have had, however, sense enough to post guards to give warning of the approach of the city police, who, while they have dispersed several crowds, have been unsuccessful in their attempts to catch any of the ragamuffins in the act of throwing rocks. – When caught, they will certainly be carried before the Mayor and fined, and have the pleasure of seeing their names flourishing under the police report.

while digging a little further, of course, i discovered that the one-and-only tess dixon had made this same discovery and blogged about it ... three years ago. which is why she is richmond's resident hipster historical expert.

she linked to this interesting firsthand account of the rock battles.

i found some other cool anecdotes. apparently, CSA president jefferson davis's own son was known to have fought with one of the gangs.

in one incident, jefferson davis tried to plead with the boys to stop fighting.

Despite police efforts to control them, the Cats continued their endless battles. The women of Richmond were particularly disturbed by the failure of the authorities to protect its citizens from gang warfare. "The law seemed powerless to put an end to this state of things," Mrs. Beers complained.(16) And Mrs. Davis described an incident that hit uncomfortably close to home. Its victim was Jim Limber, an abused Black boy taken in by the Davis family.

"Once he came in with the blood pouring over his face from a scalp wound made by a stone," wrote the First Lady of the South. "Mr. Davis was much troubled, for we were fond of the little boy. He descended the hill and, relying on his popularity with children, he made a little speech to the Butcher cats, in which he addressed them as the future rulers of their country.

"They listened attentively, nudging their approval to each other, but when he concluded, the tallest boy said, 'President, we like you, we didn't want to hurt any of your boys, but we ain't never goin' to be friends with them Hill cats.'

"So the President, like many another self-appointed peacemaker, came back without having accomplished anything except an exhausting walk."

Not even the President of the Confederate States of America could sway the Cats.

fucking ridiculous.

please disregard all previous blog posts saying i'm not going to join twitter.

giving things a test run. we'll see how it goes.

local weatherman.

i wish this guy was my local weatherman.

or my best friend.

or something.

i have a feeling this guy spent literally his entire career on the verge of being fired.

moz.

so last night's morrissey concert was totally amazing.

at one point between songs, morrissey says..

"richmond, virginia. do you have anything of dire importance to tell me?"

he tosses the mic to a girl in the front row, who shouts "i love you!"

morrissey replies..

"how original."

Thursday, March 12, 2009

morrissey.

so tomorrow i get to go see morrissey and i'm super excited, except i have no one to go with me.

a little ironic, don't you think?

twitter.

today someone asked me why i wasn't on twitter.

don't get me wrong, the IDEA of twitter totally interests me. it's a cool idea and i have a lot of friends who do it and the pop culture web 2.0 geek in me is always into new stuff like this.

but then i thought, my god, do i really need ONE MORE THING to update?

as of right now, i regularly update people on the "status" of my life via:

- my blog
- facebook
- myspace
- last.fm

already, i think we have a little TOO much updating going on. add twitter to the mix and it's insane.

pretty soon you spend so much time updating people about your life that you stop actually doing things in your life.

so.. no twitter for now. but maybe if i can get rid of one of the above sites, i might add twitter into the mix.

intense life wisdom

so i broke a series of rules i set for myself. what else is new.

but in the process, i did find this, which is pretty amazing.

every once in a while you find something on the internet that is written specifically for you at a specific moment and you're like, FINALLY internet, we have an understanding. you really get me.

but then you remember that the internet also has stuff like this and it's just a giant cesspool of random shit:

oh, internet.

slint - washer

the first time i heard "washer" by slint, it was late in the afternoon and i was in a shitty nightclub in michigan, setting up merch and waiting for our show to get started. there was a jukebox with a crazy selection and i think the song randomly came on. as soon as it did, i had to stop what i was doing and walk over to the jukebox because i thought the song was so amazing and sad.

the song went on for about nine minutes and i found myself getting lost in the music as i folded t-shirts and organized things. when it was over, more crappy emo pop music came on, followed by our show which was filled with more garbage emo pop music. the moment, as brief as it was, was long gone.

i remember we didn't have a place to stay that night and despite our best efforts, no one would take us in. we drove part of the way to the next town late into the night until we found a cheap motel to sleep in. that night while we slept, i used a stolen wireless connection to download the song, along with the rest of the album.

as it turns out - i don't like slint. bummer. the rest of the album didn't do a thing for me, but this SONG... it's so perfect. it's the sound of crushing sadness. it's a funeral. and if you know me at all, you know how i feel about a good sad song.

so if you feel like getting lost in a nine-minute dirge of sadness, today is your lucky day!

aren't you glad you stumbled across my blog?!

(sorry about the ads - i can't find a player without them)

washer - Slint

goodnight my love
remember me as you fall to sleep
fill your pockets with the dust and the memories
that rises from the shoes on my feet

i won't be back here
though we may meet again

i know it's dark outside
don't be afraid
everytime i ever cried from fear
was just a mistake that i made
wash yourself in your tears
and build your church
on the strength of your faith

please
listen to me
don't let go
don't let this desperate moonlight leave me
with your empty pillow
promise me the sun will rise again

i too am tired now
embracing thoughts of tonight's dreamless sleep
my head is empty
my toes are warm
i am safe from harm

jaws.

"If you watch the movie `Jaws' backwards, it's a movie about a shark that keeps throwing up people until they have to open a beach."

daylight savings time.

i don't know how i feel about losing an hour.

i'm thinking i'm going to go into work tomorrow an hour late. if the government is going to steal an hour from me, it's going to be an hour of work.

fuck you, dayjob!

cookout.

photos by karen. god, i love our roof.

and this was richmond exactly 6 days ago:

go figure.

i can't day drink.

our cookout was a huge hit. tons of people, lots of good food, good times all around.

i started drinking at 3:00.

i made it till about 10:15 and snuck away from everyone to go fall asleep in my bed as everyone was deciding what bar to go to. i'm actually pretty amazed i even made it past 10:00.

please let this be a notice to all my friends:

IF YOU WANT ME TO HANG OUT PAST 11:00PM, DO NOT LET ME DRINK ALCOHOL BEFORE 9:00PM.

day drinking is fun. i get it. but, just be cool with me drinking a big gulp instead. you'll thank me later when i'm raging side by side with you at last call later that night.

batman vs. a bomb

poor batman. can't catch a fucking break.

who's watching the watchmen?

so i went and saw the watchmen tonight. the night was quickly turning into one of those nights where everyone was texting everyone asking what was going on and nothing was actually going on. the idea of ending up in a bar, sitting in a booth, half-heartedly drinking beers... i just didn't want to go there.

so i checked movie times, drove to the theatre, and watched a dorky superhero movie by myself.

and it was awesome.

i know enough about the watchmen to know that it is the holy grail of graphic novels. and the fanboys who geek out about it are deadly serious. and i also knew the story was pretty complex. so a few weeks back, ian totally hooked me up with a cheap copy from his comic book store. i read it pretty quickly, over the course of a few days, and really liked it. this definitely isn't your average comic book - lots of heavy, interesting ideas and themes.

so anyway, i think i totally nailed it going into the movie tonight. i had only just recently read the graphic novel, so i wasn't some die-hard fanboy bound to be disappointed.. but i also wasn't going into the story blind, which i think would have been a little confusing. i also got to enjoy all the little nuances and things that were thrown into the movie from the graphic novel.

all in all, i thought it was a really fun dark superhero movie.

but honestly, more than anything, i think i just really enjoyed being able to step out of my brain for almost three hours and just enjoy going to the movies.

perfect night.

yankee gal re-post.

i posted this a few weeks back, but i accidentally buried it with other posts shortly afterwards. that was stupid of me, because this little short film is pretty amazing. it's student-made and it took a year to create. i think it's so beautifully done and i'm normally not any kind of animation geek.

it's only five minutes long and worth taking the time to watch.
