a note for me in the future

this is a note to remind myself 3-5 years from now when i live on my own and finally own a cat.

phil, you need to name the cat "ulysses s. cat".

thank you samm for finding the best cat name on the planet.

that is all.

hot chip.

in a perfect world, people would be fighting over seats in my car to drive up to DC for this show.

what is wrong with everyone?! it's HOT CHIP!

bailout.

billy and i were talking.. we'd both like to know just how exactly our lives are going to be effected by the gigantic financial meltdown going on right now.

on one hand, billy and i are broke dudes, so we have no investments to worry about. but on the other hand, if this thing has a ripple effect and we both lose our jobs and have to go on food stamps, that's another thing altogether.

it's weird watching the news because it doesn't seem like anyone seems to have an idea of what the full effects of this are going to be. meanwhile, no one can agree on a bailout package.. or if there should be a bailout at all. sounds like one giant clusterfuck to me.

i definitely see myself following the tradition of the ostrich and burying my head in the sand. i've got enough little small life stresses to be worrying about without the collapse of the american economy to add to the mix. besides, weren't we all supposed to be worrying about our dependence on foreign oil this month? i can't keep tabs on all the shit i'm supposed to be worried about.

needless to say, i re-registered to vote at my new address. that's ONE thing i can do to feel like i'm doing something about all this.

if you haven't registered, or aren't sure if you're registered, there's an awesome website that is super easy to check: www.voteforchange.com

kenny pointed it out to me. in two minutes i found out i was registered in virginia at my old address and then was pointed towards the right form i needed to mail off to change my address. it filled in 90% of the form for me. i printed it out and put it in the mail. done done done.

thanks obama!

dallas!

dallas was a great time.

i got in around 2:00 on wednesday, showed up at the dallas office of my company, and finally met so many of my co-workers that i'd talked to on a daily basis but never met in person. it was a great time. first off, the dallas office is fucking incredible. it's this old loft space that used to be a radio station back in the 50s. it's absolutely gorgeous inside and being there made me realize just how fully lame my office is.

i worked for a few hours, catching up on the shit i missed while i was airborne. after work, a few of us headed over to this bar called the pearl, which was right near the office. this is yet another amazing perk of working in dallas. the nearest bar to my office in richmond is a fucking outback steakhouse.

so i got approval from my boss to buy some drinks, which i gladly did.. and we all proceeded to get drunk and talk shit and gossip about our wonderful company. it was definitely a good time.

afterwards, i got a ride back to my hotel with my co-worker becky. about a block away from the hotel, i mentioned the fact that i forgot to make plans to go see the book depository building and the grassy knoll, the site of kennedy's assassination. becky did a u-turn, and at midnight, we ended up being late night tourists. we're walking around looking at the various landmarks when all of a sudden, out of nowhere, this homeless dude appears and starts giving us the most AMAZING tour. he has all the facts, he knows all the conspiracy theories. he starts telling us the most crazy shit about how jack ruby owed money to the mafia.. and the mafia was in bed with the CIA.. and how lee harvey oswald was just a patsy in the whole thing. fucking CRAZY. i was just drunk enough and just amazed enough at our crazy homeless knowledgeable tourguide that i gave him a $20.

so how do you celebrate getting quite possibly the best tour of an assassination site in your life? well, you continue the festivities by heading to a bar called "lee harvey's", which is exactly what we did. a few more beers later, and i'm thoroughly drunk, thoroughly tired and ready to head back to the hotel.

now, the hotel i'm staying in is fancy. and by fancy i mean, there is absolutely no reason whatsoever that a person like me should be staying there. but because my company likes to throw money at things, i somehow ended up with a room there. i don't question it.

now, i'm drunk and i show up to the hotel at 1:00am and i drunkenly request my room and all that. i inquire about the pool being open, and i am told that sadly it is closed for the night. bummer. i get my room key, 362, and head up to the third floor.

i arrive to the third floor and look to my right to see the doors to the fancy named suites and then to my left where all the other rooms are. i start trudging down the hall with my giant luggage and look for my room. i get all the way to the end of the hall and the last room is 361.

WHAT THE FUCK?

i look all around trying to find my mysterious room, but the hall literally ends one number short.

my first assumption is that the desk guy saw that i was drunk and he was fucking with me. i have to admit, it would have been a pretty funny joke. so i start heading back to the elevators, about to go downstairs and congratulate the guy on his well-executed prank. well, as i'm standing there in the hallway, i notice that the named suites have numbers as well... and goddamnit if there isn't one with a 362 on it.

somehow for some crazy reason, i got upgraded to a suite without my prior knowledge.

i go into this suite, drunk and tired, and i am absolutely blown away by the radness of this hotel room. it's designed to look like a fancy new york city apartment. there's a gigantic king-size bed, a giant flat screen HDTV, an executive desk, various chairs to lounge in, a gigantic mirror, and a terry cloth robe waiting for me on the bed. HOLY SHIT.

i took a bunch of pictures before i fucked it all up, crawled into bed and just laughed at how awesome this hotel rooom was.. and what a shame it was that i didn't have a beautiful girl to impress with it.

i fell asleep, woke up to a delicious gourmet breakfast in my room (shit cost me $20!!) and took a shower in the ridiculous giant four-person sized shower.

i came crashing back to reality when i left the hotel, went back to work, and of course, got slammed with the various day-to-day work shit that i deal with. then at 2:00 it was back to the airport where i plugged in and worked a few more hours. i even did an hour or so of work on the plane, since i had nothing else to do.

i got home around 10:30pm to find richmond in the middle of a giant storm. it was nice though. after the sun and heat of san diego and dallas, it was nice to get a little gloomy.

all in all, a pretty awesome trip. i hope i get to travel again soon, because i could get used to staying in fancy hotels and not having to pay for any of my meals.

sunny san diego

hello from california!

my computer clock says it's 11:00am, but i know it's lying. it's early as shit. i'm all kinds of messed up from these timezones. one thing i've learned for certain: working on the east coast for a west coast client is AMAZING. you get a three-hour headstart in the morning and you look productive as shit. now i'm waking up here to find that my co-workers have already logged in an hour of work. i feel behind schedule all the time!

the downside, of course, is that you end up working later, but i have a funny feeling that if i worked out here, i'd be working just as late too.

so yesterday and today i've been working out of the client's headquarters. it has been a trip meeting the people who i talk to almost daily and have never before met. it's nice to put a face to a name. that's the primary reason for the trip, i suppose.. to get me introduced to the client and for me to meet some more members of my team. it's been nice.

i guess i was expecting a little more excitement from the trip. i don't know why really. but i generally spent most of yesterday in my co-worker's cubicle doing the same daily shit i do in richmond, just located in a different timezone. we had a few meetings that were productive, so that was cool. but for the most part, it was like any other workday. not sure what fireworks i had been expecting, but either way, it's fine.

last night i had dinner with some co-workers, which is always fun because you get to hear the serious gossip and shit talk and find out what people really think of things. it was nice. my two co-workers are slightly older and probably see a lot of themselves in me as a young person starting out in the ad agency world, so they were definitely giving out a lot of advice, which was greatly appreciated. one piece of advice was ... move to new york city.

it's always been something that i thought was way out of my price range and comfort level, and the million other reasons that most people cite for not wanting to live in the crazy gigantic city that is new york. but for some reason, hearing my co-workers talk about it.. it seemed like the most simple easy thing to do. definitely got me thinking.

i've got a new york city trip coming up in october. maybe i need to keep my eyes a little more open and reconsider leaving it off the list of "phil's potential next step cities".

i'm leaving the comfort of the hotel room bed and heading off to HQ again. tomorrow i'm flying off to dallas to meet a whole other group of co-workers. it's going to be a lot more fun.. i have a feeling it's going to involve drinking, not dressing up in business casual clothes, and a lot of laughs. i'm excited.

oh, and on an unrelated note, i sort of half-watched heroes season premiere last night and decided i'm totally over this show. i kinda fell off last season and now i'm totally not into it. one more hour of weekly TV watching crossed off the list.

being 28 is awesome!

so my birthday was great. totally calm and nice and exactly what i'd hoped for.

work was nice and relatively calm. i actually left at 5:30, which if you've heard me bitch and complain at all in the past months, you'll know that's a BIG DEAL.

i got a number of really cool birthday surprises, that i was very very happy about.

first off, i found some money deposited in my checking account from mom. always amazing.

then kenny got me a hot new flux rad t-shirt that i've been eyeing for months, along with a 12 pack of diet pepsis, which anyone can tell you is the key to my heart.

marisa got me a new book to read on my upcoming trip, which should help pass the hours of air travel in my future. she also got me a ulysses s. grant finger puppet. civil war birthday gifts are truly the best gifts.

mari took me completely by surprise with the most amazing workday surprise i've ever received. a florist arrived to the office to bring me THIS BEAUTY:

it's a fucking bouquet beer mug.. with FLOWERS FOR FOAM. seriously, i laughed so hard. i loved it. brilliant.

after work, me and the roommates headed to chipotle for birthday burritos. they were delicious as expected. afterwards, we headed to the mall to help me figure out some new business casual shit to buy for my trip on sunday. i left with a new shirt and a new business-y belt to fit my thinner waistline. i still need some new shoes, but by and large, i think i'll be able to wing this whole business casual thing.

the struggle, ultimately, is making business casual cool.. which is almost impossible, but i think i've at least brought myself a little closer.

anyway, the whole thing was hilarious. three grown ass dudes, walking around macy's together looking at belts, slacks, and polo shirts. when i nicknamed the new apartment "grown up house", i wasn't kidding around.

anyway, tonight we party in earnest. i'm sure there will be pictures surfacing on the internet somewhere.

thanks for all the birthday wishes on the internet, via phone, in person, and otherwise. i have pretty awesome friends.

today i was blown away by all the birthday love i received.

full recap to come!

thanks everybody!!

28.

tomorrow i turn 28.

this means that starting tomorrow, it will be significantly more sketchy to make out with 21-year-olds. not that it wasn't sketchy at 27, i'm just saying it's going to be even MORE sketchy.

however, it means it's significantly LESS sketchy to make out with 35-year-olds.

helloooooo ladies!

last night i went to sticky rice for dinner with tanja and lloyd and a new dude i met named andre. what started out as dinner quickly turned into a hang sesh as a bunch of friends arrived and i was convinced to sing karaoke. i did one of my all-time favorites, "against all odds" by phil collins. i think it was a hit!

there was a girl who sang after me that got pretty much molested by a drunken cougar. this lady was trashed and decided that it was time for her to climb on stage and share the mic with a complete stranger. it was a complete nightmare. embarrassment transfer everywhere. but the girl handled it like a pro, i was impressed. i would have been like "bitch, this is a moment between myself, phil collins, and a room full of people eating sushi, you stay out of it."

i made it home to bed around midnight, which kept me safe from the "tired at work" blues. not too bad for a tuesday night!

so this weekend is a mega big weekend. we've got a birthday party on friday, 90's alt-rock night on saturday, and sunday i fly off to san diego and then dallas for a few days for work.

i haven't traveled for work in years and i'm all nervous about it.

i need to IRON CLOTHES! gahhh!!

on a related note, i'm learning more and more that current tv is fucking awesome.

9/11

9/11.

i actually didn't really take a lot of time to process the fact that we had hit the 7-year anniversary. i recognized the date, moved on, and got on with my busy day. work has been a little insane this week, so there wasn't a lot of time to sit and let something like this sink in.

every morning, our company sends out an e-mail to all employees, usually asking some kind of revealing question that people can answer and then it's included in the company e-newsletter later in the day. it's a "get to know your employees" type thing and it's generally pretty interesting. it's a little thing, but it helps you get to know people i never see in real life (since 2/3 of our company works in dallas and i've never met them).

today's question was "where were you when you first heard about the attacks on 9/11?"

i could write pages and pages on this question. i could write every little nuanced detail about that day. i remember more things about 9/11/01 than i remember about yesterday. it's just one of those things that lock into your brain and never lets go.

anyway, around noon the responses came back and they were overwhelming. so many people had responded. so many people felt the NEED to respond.. even today, seven years later. i read the responses and there were a myriad of different stories, a lot of them similar to my own. i just remember as i read them, all the noise and the clutter dropped out of my head and i was just totally caught up in these different stories and recollections. my own memories came flooding back as well.

so here we are seven years later. bush is still our president. we're fighting seemingly endless wars. there are still two holes where the towers stood. the whole thing just has me feeling sad.

i hope in november i can start feeling hopeful about things again.

i am not a very political person, but i believe more than ever, we have a responsibility to fix all the wrongs we've done in the world in the last eight years. we have to repair the damage done, domestically and abroad, especially the wrongs done in the name of september 11th.

i don't know, i'm not trying to get overly political here.

i believe in a government's job to protect its citizens and provide security, but i also believe in protecting freedom, and the minute we compromise someone's civil liberties or we start bending the rules, we're no better than the people we're trying to defend ourselves against.

okay, stopping now. vote for obama. the end.

zzzz

i'm learning more and more that my mental state and sleep are intrinsically linked.

if i don't get a good night's sleep, i start freaking out about shit that i normally keep under control. today at work i was totally overwhelmed and having semi-realistic "i've gotta quit" type thoughts.

then i got in my car and realized.. i've had way worse days at work.

i just didn't get any sleep the night before.

so, with that said, it's 10:00pm and i'm going to clock in a solid nine hours tonight and get myself back on the right track.

it's the least i can do to celebrate the world not ending when they turned on the LARGE HADRON COLLIDER. (if you don't know, google that shit.)

g'night blog.

brown bag lunch.

oh MAN.

i totally want this in my future.

and i am feeling kinda sexist about it.

sexist feelings aside, the note is what makes the lunch. followed by the peanut butter to dip the apples in. man, that is some serious TLC.

i feel like if i were in a marriage where i stayed home or worked less, i could pack a mean lunch for my wife. it wouldn't be very good, but i could at least write pretty good "have a great day at work!" notes.

while we're talking about marriage, let's talk about something else that's probably more likely to happen in the next five years:

as if there wasn't enough for me to worry about, someone had to make this goddamn video.

true blood.

last night i watched the series premiere of a new show from alan ball (creator of six feet under) called "true blood".

i had been planning to watch the season premiere of entourage when i found out about the show on HBO's website. first off, if alan ball's involved.. i'm already 75% sold. dude is a total genius. anyone who reads this blog already knows that my love for six feet under knows no bounds.

anyway, the show is about vampires. but in typical alan ball style, it is in no way typical. it's set in the deep american south and the premise is that the japanese have invented synthetic blood, and vampires no longer need to kill humans to slate their thirst and have come out of hiding to join society. i wrote and re-wrote that sentence 3 times trying to find a way to not make it sound kinda weird and lame, but you're just going to have to trust me. it's an interesting show and i think it's got a lot of potential.

the first episode was pretty awesome if you can make your way to a television with HBO on it.

entourage was, of course, totally awesome.. and yet completely unfulfilling. i hate the 30 minute episode sometimes. you just can't fit enough in.

in order to keep my blog from turning into a livejournal, i'm gonna skip the weekend recap this week. needless to say, it was fun and awesome and involved lots of dancing.

okay, i will show you one thing.. i was part of a rooftop shirtless man-status photo shoot on saturday afternoon. one word: epic. more words: epic, and a little bit gay.
