oh my god it's almost over

so saturday, we moved in to the new place.

the move itself went surprisingly well. i was basically in a state of panic for the 24 hours preceding the move and ended the experience feeling very relieved and happy. i won't bore you with the details, but the people who showed up to help made things so easy and we were finished far sooner than i expected. so THANK YOU, moving friends.

once the dust settled and the celebratory lunch at perly's was finished, i began the daunting task of unpacking all those boxes. to complicate things, jenny was in town all weekend, so i was constantly torn between my OCD desire to finish what i started and the desire to hang out with a beautiful girl all day. i found the perfect balance, getting my room more or less finished by sunday night and spending an amazing sunday afternoon relaxing at the river. jenny was super understanding, only getting slightly annoyed at the end of the weekend, when she needed to go to bed early, and i'd taken the entire bed over with huge stacks of cds in need of alphabetizing. two hundred patience points awarded to jenny.

kenny and i started getting our den put together. the next daunting steps are the bathroom and the kitchen, and of course, hanging all of our various artwork. we've got a lot of walls and a lot of artwork between the two of us. we need to have a meeting of the minds and decide what goes where. i think kenny's got a better eye for it than i do, so i think i'll let him take the lead.

perhaps the most annoying and frustrating thing about the weekend was the fact that we had NO AIR-CONDITIONING. thanks realty company! we told them we didn't think the a/c worked on MONDAY of last week, and he waited until FRIDAY to get a guy out to look at it. of course, as always, a part needed to be ordered, which means no a/c till monday. as of right now, it's 4:45pm on monday and i have yet to receive a call. if this is the way things go with the landlord from here on out, we could definitely have a problem on our hands. that problem being me calling them five times a day asking for updates. i have absolutely no problem being annoying when i don't have air-conditioning.

along with the air-conditioning are a few other super-annoying little detail problems that, no matter how closely you look at a place during the tour, you never notice them until you're actually moved in. for instance, i have an outlet in my room that is tied to a light switch in the bathroom. how in the fuck does that make any sense?

i promise i'll calm down once they fix our a/c, bring out the maintenance dude, and i clear out all these half-empty boxes. until then i'm taking deep breaths and enjoying the a/c while i have it here at work.

A/C UPDATE ALERT: 4:53pm! according to kenny, the a/c dudes just arrived. this is like the realty company throwing the basketball from mid-court in the last seconds of the game and actually making the shot. well done, realty company. they must be reading this blog and knew they had to step their game up.

The first place I lived when I arrived in Richmond, I had a window in my room that looked out on a beautiful view of... the hallway. Yeah. I could see the door to the only bathroom that had a shower, and to another roommate's room. So everyone had to walk around my bedroom (noisy old second story wooden floors, too) to get to that bathroom. Which had a light switch in the hallway, not too uncommon but annoying when you have a really childish roommate and you're taking a shower late at night.

If you've got friends who are good at taking things apart and putting them back together, there's probably a relatively simple fix in regards to the outlet / switch issue. I know my dad was always good with that stuff but personally I don't know how to do it myself. You'd probably want to shut the power off before messing, of course.

I'm so happy for you and that everything went smooth. Yay!

Oh man, moving sucks! I guess since you were a military brat you got pretty good at it as a kid. I dread every time that we have to move. Unpacking is the worst because you just want it to all be done. I hate living among half unpacked boxes, looking for dishes to eat on, trying to find the shirt you want to wear, all while trying to deal with stupid logisical things. That outlet think sucks!

Well, good luck with the rest of everything. You have an awesome place, I can't wait to see pictures of it furnished!
