steve jobs is out to get me.

so, after my mac freakout, i had a few conversations with a few good mac-using friends and they talked me down off the ledge. in fact, i spent the better part of this weekend, knee deep in my itunes library, re-organizing and dumping things in from my ipod and from my previous computer's hard drive. when i say it was not easy, please believe me. i had to re-tag just about everything and make sure everything was correct and organized.

rather than get annoyed, i reached this zen-like state, where i actually found this strange comfort in cataloging all my music.

i still have a lot to learn, but i felt like giving in to apple's way of organizing my life musically was a good place to start.

then things took a dramatic turn.

yesterday, as i was tagging itunes stuff, i noticed something strange. my screen was getting whiter. that's right, WHITER. not brighter.

i noticed that my screen was slowly getting washed out and light greyer by the minute. i panicked, turned my screen off and then turned it back on and it was back to normal. then slowly, the grey started creeping back after about 5-10 minutes.

i was thinking exactly what you are thinking - WHAT THE FUCKING FUCK?!

i called my new pals at applecare to tell them about my problem and they were thoroughly confused by it. we tried 4-5 different things and the final consensus was "GIVE UP" and i guess i'm now due a new imac.

i took my new dead friend to the short pump apple store. upon further discussion, i discovered that it would take them 72 hours to remove the data off the old computer and put it onto a new computer. i said, "heyo folks! that's a long time! why don't *I* do it?" so i lugged my imac back to my car and home again. you see, i have this external hard drive that i was using on my PC and i figured i could give that "time machine" application a try.

i had all my mp3s on this external hard drive, so i had to get my ass in gear and finish all my transferring/cataloging business in itunes. once i did that, i started running time machine and everything seems to be going smoothly.

tomorrow i'll take my imac back (again) to the store. while i'm there, i'll order up my NEW imac, and then use time machine to load all my goodies on the new computer.

this whole thing has been quite the ridiculous ordeal. what are the odds of two computers having major malfunctions in the course of a week.. and a NEW imac at that!? anyway, i'm trying not to let this whole episode discourage me. in order to justify this ridiculousness, i am going to upgrade my hard drive on the new imac to 500gb and get myself a different keyboard that i like more. if i have to go through all this shit, might as well get EXACTLY what i want!

mac experience: week one. off to a bad start. but i am not giving up.

I feel like it's a test of your loyalty to apple. Like when they know you're a newbie, they give you a lemon first. I was determined to love my Mac after being PC-only until mid 2006. My MacBook HD died 3 times within the first 5 months of having it. Along the way I was sent a complimentary external and eventually a brand new pimped out MacBook to replace the lemon. However, lots of data was lost along the way. But I still love having a Mac and now tables have turned and I have freak outs at work on the PC. Hate it a lot.

Aww, sorry your mac-owning experience did not start out on a good note. Time Machine is the sweetest thing ever, though. Had it not been for that handy little feature, my brother would have lost years of research and data and, consequently, the basis for his thesis! Eep.
