first day of work 2009.
you know, i had a lot of mixed feelings about returning, but i gotta say, so far it doesn't seem like it's going to be that crazy this month. there is the usual workload, but due to budget cuts and things slowing down in general, i get the feeling that the next few months are gonna be a little bit light.
our contract renews with our client in april, so there's all kinds of question marks as to whether or not that will happen. i think we're confident, but it's never a guarantee, obviously.
so between the contract being up in april and things possibly slowing down, my worried mind doesn't skip a beat and jumps right into "uh oh layoffs!" mode. apparently, my mind doesn't have an "off" switch for worrying. it's like matter - you can't create or destroy it - just shift it around. the thing is, i'm not really that worried. it was just on my mind on this quiet day.
i have yet to see any significant impact from this recession on my day-to-day life, which is quite a relief. i'm definitely preparing for it though. i've started putting more money into savings and worked harder on that nest egg to ensure that i'm a little more secure if the hammer falls.
i love richmond and i love the people here, but so many kids i know in this town live on a razor's edge between paying the bills and being homeless. i wonder if they're as worried as i am or if they have any kind of plan.
what about you, internet blog reader? are you doing anything in particular to brace for this recession? are you making any life changes? i'm curious.

The big elephant in the office reeked of layoffs today... first day back from a holiday break. We'll see.
Changes = being realistic & open-minded with short-term and long-term goals and being pretty strict with my budget. 10% of my income is mine for spending & gas, the rest is straight to debt / savings.
Going back to school is still a top goal but I have to build a solid bridge to get from here and now to there, in the meantime.
The best change to make is to just throw caution to the wind and embrace change. More often than not, the loss of a job or a big unexpected change in life opens doors to incredibly rewarding experiences and opportunities. You may trip and fall, but the landing could be right in the middle of that record label you want to start.
jc. she is long winded.
i have made no plans, except dating a boy who loves me and has a relatively lay-off-free job.
