so.. i am terribly guilty of writing off bands that i've never heard. usually, i do okay, i think. you can't check out EVERY band. you have to draw the line somewhere, right?
i usually judge bands by their names. if it sounds indie in that pretentious indie way, i tend to generally avoid the band. because odds are i will likely hate it. i've never listened to an entire "clap your hands say yeah" or "!!!" or "wolf parade" song. i don't feel too bad about it.
now, before you all chime in saying that is idiotic... it's okay. i know it is. i know i've probably missed out on countless amazing bands because of this method. my backup method is that usually the internet, or the recommendations of my friends will eventually right all the wrongs done by my arbitrary non-listening choices. if a band is really good, i'll hear about it.
sometimes, however, bands slip through the cracks.
up until yesterday i had never heard of bon iver.
that makes me a fucking idiot, because he's totally awesome. i have totally been sleeping on that shit. the dude writes sad depressing awesome songs on an acoustic guitar, which is musical candy to my ears.
if you're currently sleeping on bon iver, or are interested in becoming a sad bastard, you should watch the video below:

Justin Vernon is a cool dude. I had the pleasure of talking to him over the phone a few years back when weather put the nix on an in-studio we were supposed to do. Gooood stuff.
this version of 'skinny love' from december is gorgeous. that song is amazing.

Actually Phil. You can check out every band.
Step your game up.
Phil -- what's your opinion on Sufjan Stevens? his song John Wayne Gacy, Jr. - quite possibly the most gut-wrenching awful and beautiful song all at once.. I highly recommend giving it a listen and the rest of the "Illinois" album if you haven't already. :)
glad so many people like bon iver!
regarding sufjan, i've been a fan of his for years. such an awesome artist. we're definitely overdue for a new album in his 50 states project.
